Dog Tricks--Dog Apps/ Reference & Help

Dog Tricks

Iphone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Reference & Help
Updated:  December 12, 2012
$0.99

This app is a great one to add to your phone.  This app includes several helpful features.  Included in the "Tricks" section is a list of things to teach your dog with pictures and instructions on how to do so.  This list includes both basic training (such as sit and come) and trick training (such as dance).

Also included in this app is a "Search" section where you can search different dog breeds and read basic information on each breed.  A very helpful reference.

I would highly recommend this app to any dog owner.  Keep in mind that the instructions given within the app are a basic overview of each command or trick.  If you are having a hard time training your dog on basic things like sit and come when called, this app may offer some assistance, but professional training help is recommended.  For those owners who have a good grasp on basic obedience and want to add a few tricks, I would highly recommend this app.

Pictures of the selected command or behavior.
Hit the info button to get the description of how to do this.

The "Search" section of this app.
You can search dog breeds and get basic information of each breed.

Finally, the Dog Tricks app includes a "Bark Machine" section.
This is similar to many dog bark apps.
Each button makes a different noise to tease your dog.

Dog Sounds--Dog App/ Accessories

Dog Sounds

Iphone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Accessory
Updated:  December 1, 2011
FREE

Similar to other audible dog apps, the Dog Sounds app lists different kinds of barks and other dog noises.  The basic free version of this app lists 16 different kinds of dog sounds.

Overall I would say this app is a waste of time.  This app offers no knowledge or help and the dog sounds it does offer are random and limited at best.

I do not recommend this app.

Barking Dog--Dog Apps/ Accessory

Barking Dog

iPhone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Accessory
Updated:  September 28, 2013
FREE

Another app to tease your dog with.  This app contains several different kinds of dog barks and noises.
There are 13 different barks, wines, or other noises to choose from.

Again, this is an app to basically tease your dog, and is therefore not something I would generally recommend.  However, if you are in the midst of training your dog to not bark when he hears other dog noises, this could be a helpful training tool.

Touching the BG button will change the background screen to another dog,
but will not change any of the sounds.

Dog Breeds--Dog Apps/ Reference

Dog Breeds

Another helpful app that I would recommend.  This app will allow you to select from a list of known dog breeds.  Once you have chosen, the app reveals a picture of the breed with basic information including:  description, appearance, temperament, and health and physiology.

Although this app is a great reference, I prefer the Perfect Dog app.  The applications are basically identical, except the Perfect Dog app is easier to use, and contains more information.

Perfect Dog--Dog Apps/ Reference

Perfect Dog

iPhone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Reference

This a wonderful app to add to your phone.  This reference gives you a list of all (or most) known dog breeds.  You may choose a breed and it will show you pictures of dogs in that breed and then give you basic information on the breed including:  breed origin, height, weight, history, appearance, temperament, and other names the breed may be known by.

For a dog professional such as myself, this has been a very helpful go-to app during training.  For the average person, this app is still a great thing to have.  You can quickly and easily learn about your favorite breed, or look up a random dog you saw at the park.  I would recommend this app to anyone considering adding a new dog to their household.

There is also a section called "Match" on this app where you can choose characteristics of a dog you are looking for and the app will give you several suggestions.

GREAT APP!  I highly recommend this app to any dog lover or dog professional.

Select your breed.

It will first show you pictures of that breed.

One swipe over and you are given tons of info on that breed.

Dog Translator!

This is app is quite silly but can be fun.  Basically you tap to start recording your dog's barks or noises, wait a second, and the app will translate what your dog is trying to tell you (or what the app thinks your dog might be trying to tell you).

There is absolutely no science behind this app and what it translates is not necessarily what the dog is feeling.  This app is just for fun.  If you have a dog that is vocal a lot of the time, it might be fun for you.

Doggie Dash!--Dog Apps/ Game

Doggie Dash!

iPhone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Game
Updated:  July 16, 2013
FREE

This is a basic run and jump game featuring a dog.  The dog jumps over the spaces between grass patches and around/over enemies and jumps up to collect gems.

Overall, worst game ever.  This game is hard to control, super boring, and has almost nothing exciting to look forward to.

Dogs Playing Poker--Dog Apps/ GameGame

iPhone Apps about dogs/ Dog Game
Released:  April 27, 2010
FREE

Dogs Playing Poker

If you enjoy poker, Texas hold-em, and like dogs, you'll love this app.  I enjoy many types of games.  Generally, I'm not super into poker games, but I very much enjoyed this one.

Although being familiar with the game of poker will help, it isn't necessary.  There is a tutorial on this game that explains how Texas hold-em is played, and you are given several hands to practice.

You are given one of the dog players, the free version always starts you with the Dalmatian, and off you go with your game.  Games take place in many places from the pound, to a Chinese kitchen.  The cartoon based game play of the dogs is very pleasing and cute.  It actually makes me think I'm playing with dog characters from some sort of Disney movie.

For an additional fee of only $1.99 you are given the opportunity to play with any of the dog characters and change their name.  I was under the impression you would be able to create your own new dog character with this addition fee, but no such luck.

Overall I'd say that this is a GREAT GAME.  If you enjoy Poker and dogs, you can't really go wrong.  I'd recommend this game to anyone.  It's also quite fun when you win the round and some of the other dogs growl at you because they lost.

Scruffy3D-- Dog Apps/ Game

Scruffy3D

iPhone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Game
Released:  July 1, 2012
FREE

The evil frogmen of Mars have stolen Scruffy's bones.  This run and jump game contains 20 levels of fun including:  secret bone hunts, day and night environments, boat levels, and a showdown with the King martian.

Overall I found the game hard to control.  I suppose that as with anything, more practice would make it easier.  But I find the way the controls work on this game to be slow to respond and somewhat annoying.

Dog Sounds--Dog Apps/ Reference & Accessories

Dog Sounds

iPhone Apps for Dogs/ Dog Reference & Accessories
Updated:  August 10, 2013
FREE

In this new series on my blog, I will be reviewing the many iPhone apps available that have to do with dogs.  This will include helpful, informative, and fun apps.

This app is much more useful than some of the other basic dog sound apps.  This app includes sounds of domestic dogs and different kinds of wild dogs.  It also includes an "Attention" section that includes the dog teasing sounds like a cat, the door bell, and someone knocking.  The real bonus to this app is the section called "Body Talk."  This section gives you body postures for different moods of your dog. For example, how a playful dog's body looks compared to anxious or aggressive dog.

As with most of the dog sound apps, I believe they are not especially useful and are generally used to tease a dog, which I don't recommend.  However the Body Talk portion of this app makes it worth while.  Noticing body language in your and other people's dogs can be very helpful and I encourage everyone to have at least some understanding of dog body language.

This is the best part of this app.
